How to add a fun DIY “mummy” door Halloween decoration!
This super simple Halloween door craft almost turned
into a fail…but we loved it even more in the end!
I saw this mummy door decoration and knew I wanted to try it out on our front porch. We
put our own little spin on it and it turned out SO cute.
I did this at our last house but dug up this DIY to do it again!
It only takes a few craft supplies — I used some white crepe paper from the dollar store (they came two to a
pack and I ended up using both) and cut strips of it to wrap around
the front door.
I taped the streamers on the sides of the door and it was time consuming but easy. The
hardest part of the whole thing was trying to keep all three animals from
escaping while I had the door open. 😉
I didn’t take pictures of this part because I was so focused on the
escapees, but the instructions are pretty self explanatory:
- Starting with the top of the door, I taped up one side, then pull it over and tear the crepe paper where it met the other side of the door.
- Keep going until you cover the entire door. It’s OK if some of the door shows though — I probably added more strips than needed.
- After the door was wrapped I knew I
wanted to make a cute face for our mummy, so I grabbed some poster boards to
make the eyes and a mouth:

I traced the top of a bowl for the large circles and another for the smaller circles to make the black pupils. I hand drew a cute, wonky smile on black poster board and cut it out.
I hot glued the face parts directly to the white streamers. (Just watch so that the glue doesn’t touch your door.)
You can use construction paper for the mummy eyes and mouth as well!
We left for the day after I finished and for some reason I had this urge to
take a picture of it. Not sure why, I just thought to myself “just in case”:
I zoomed in on him as we drove off and I’m glad I got a before shot. 😉

I loved the mummy door.
about cried. The crepe paper streamers had loosened up with the night air and drooped
like crazy:
I was SO upset!
But the longer I looked, the more I realized he still looked
cute. And the longer we kept him up the more I loved him. As my husband pointed out — the droopy mummy looks more like a real mummy. 😉

If your front door is exposed to the elements you may want to do this inside. If you have a storm door that may help, it was the wet nighttime air that made the crepe paper loosen
up.
I think white tulle or toilet paper would work well for this Halloween door decoration also!
What I thought was a fail definitely grew on me. 🙂 It took about an
hour to put up and cost two bucks for the two packages of crepe paper.
If you
want to splurge on wider paper I think that would cut down on the time factor
quite a bit. While I was doing it I was wishing my crepe was about double the
width. I may try that next time.
